Sun 2/28 Paul Cataldo at Town Pump Tavern

Sunday Feb 28
Paul Cataldo
at Town Pump Tavern
8pm

Paul Cataldo is a New England based 26 year old singer/songwriter born and raised in the Boston area. With a passion and appreciation for great songwriters at an early age, picking up the guitar seemed mandatory. Paul has been writing music and molding a style like no other since the age of fourteen, looking up to artists such as Cat Stevens, Neil Young and Johnny Cash. While studying the craft of song writing and creating his own music, Paul began realizing the significance of quality lead (instrumental) parts to his songs.

Insisting on being a self taught musician, he locked himself away in his room and studied note for note the guitar styles of John Fogerty, Lindsay Buckingham, Jimi Hendrix and others. Getting anxious for more stage time, Paul began asking around town looking for a professional spot in a bar band playing lead guitar. Eventually he found himself playing lead guitar and singing backup vocals with an established classic rock tribute band named Shortbus from Massachusetts.

After 3 yrs of playing cover songs at a professional level, Paul knew it was time to make the move and take his original songs to one of the three music capitals. Although they do possess a country twang in their style, the original songs are a bit more dominated by folk and rock influence and with New York City only 200 miles South of home, the Big Apple became the obvious decision over Nashville.

Paul continues to relentlessly pursue his dream of recording and playing live for a living. Determined and not easily discouraged his will stays strong and his goals stay within reach.

Accomplishments he would like to achieve over the next year or so include touring major music cities across the U.S., expanding the loyal fan base, and pushing songs from the new EP “Home” for placement in television and movies. With his heart set on the road, determined and focused, Paul Cataldo is destined to do what he was put on this earth to do...sing his songs for a lifetime to people all over this world.

Sat 2/27 Red June at Black Mtn Ctr for the Arts

Saturday February 27
Red June
at Black Mountain Ctr for the Arts
7:30 pm

Red June, a musical collaboration from Asheville, NC, brings together three contrasting but complementary musicians in a beautifully distilled form. Will Straughan, John Cloyd Miller, and Natalya Weinstein as Red June will play on Saturday, February 27 at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts, located in the beautifully renovated old City Hall at 225 W. State Street.

Admission per person is a $10 donation at the door for a 7:30 concert time with general seating and no reservations in advance.

Will Straughan, who performed with the Emma Gibbs Band from 1996 to 2004, is a talented multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and singer with an instantly recognizable vocal style and approach. A sought-after session player, he currently works with Eliza Lynn, and Lance Mills, among others. John Cloyd Miller is a versatile singer/songwriter as well, concentrating largely on bluegrass music for the past several years in the band Lo-Fi Breakdown. His vocal and instrumental style is soulful and genuine with an unmistakably old-time flavor.

Natalya Weinstein plays almost any style of fiddle or violin and is a solid harmony singer. Her experiences include regular performances with Polecat Creek and Lo-Fi Breakdown, recording sessions as a fiddler on several albums, and accomplished instructor to both youth and adults in the Asheville area.

As a vehicle for Will and John's original music as well as other favorites, the trio began playing together in 2005, performing once or twice a year as schedules allowed. With the desire to make more time for a project, Will, Natalya and John started rehearsing again in late 2008 and soon coalesced into the current ensemble, Red June. They recently received funding for their first album, in part, by a Regional Artist Project Grant of the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources, and the Asheville Area Arts Council.

Don’t miss this multitalented trio in the intimate setting and great acoustics of BMCA’s concert room.

Sat 2/27 DSF Earth Corps at The Watershed

Saturday Feb 27
DSF Earth Corps
a The Watershed
9pm

D.S.F. Earth Corps has been writing and performing original music since the early 1990’s. This is a group of seasoned performers who really enjoy making music together. Each member of D.S.F. has gone off and been involved with other projects along the way, which has given the band a maturity and experience that, when brought back together, really shows.

Guitarist and lead vocalist, Phillip Price, originally from Atlanta, has been singing, writing, and playing guitar since 1983. Attending Western Carolina University, Price met vocalist Jeff Johnson and percussionist Ned Percival and began forming the bond that holds D.S.F. tightly in the groove. Johnson and Price have been working on harmonies with each others voice for over 20 years resulting in some very compelling and powerful sounds.

In 2000, D.S.F. began performing together again and have been working on new songs that will be compiled on a full length album sometime in the near future.

Fri 2/26 Kevin Scanlon at Straightaway Cafe

Friday Feb 26
Kevin Scanlon
at Straightaway Cafe

6pm

Kevin began his journey into song-writing in his early teens, and has been a prolific lyricist ever since. The first instrument Kevin played seriously was the guitar, and has since developed a refreshingly traditional finger-picking style that is suited to the songs he writes and performs. Whether it's an original piece or the works of Elizabeth Cotten to Townes Van Zandt, Kevin is able to perform a very authentic sound, especially when his harmonica is hanging from his harness.

In the mid 90's, Kevin's taste in music started to shift to historical cultural music. . Walking into a local pub during an open Irish jam would change him as a musician. This music has a simple honesty in both the subject matter and music arrangement, which is what ended up the foundation for Kevin Scanlon as a musician. It opened up a world of new music study, including old European folk music, Irish sea shanties, old country and bluegrass.

Logically, his next instrument of interest was the banjo. He developed competent technique in both claw-hammer(old time)and 3 finger(bluegrass) styles.

Now Kevin had the tools in his bag to perform century old folk music as well as popular modern music. Add a very unique vocal timbre and lyrics written for the common man about the real world around us, and we have a well rounded, straight forward artist who's message needs to be heard. In the past years, Kevin has toured all over the eastern seaboard playing with a diverse group of artists, as well as solo performing. He has performed with a professional vocal ensemble, a few bluegrass groups, folk projects, rock and roll, and projects in Irish music from traditional to modern Irish punk.

Currently residing in rural North Carolina, his art having been tempered by his life experience, Kevin has come into his own. His very original sound is defined and polished. Now all that remains is to spread his message to the public.

Fri 2/26 Levi Douglas & Josh Singleton at White Horse

Friday February 26
Levi Douglas and Josh Singleton
at White Horse Black Mountain
8pm

Born in the small town of Pistol Thicket, Lousiana, Levi Douglas began his blues odyssey at the tender age of seven when he received his first guitar, a Sears Silvertone. Raised the son of a preacher man, Levi studied under the tutelage of family friend, the Reverend James T. Thornton of Slidell, LA whilst honing his skills performing in the family church and listening to the records of Albert King, Albert Collins, Howlin' Wolf, T. Bone Walker, and many other blues greats. At the age of 22, Levi moved to Texas where he continued to hone his skills in the smoky clubs of Austin and San Antonio and developed friendships with such notables as Alan Haynes and Uncle John Turner among others.

Since arriving in Asheville, Levi has worked with many of the top local and regional acts in the area as a guitarist and is continuing the blues tradition fronting his own band and putting his unique spin on the music he loves.

Joshua Singleton was lucky enough to be born and raised around Jackson, Tennessee which is halfway between Memphis and Nashville. How could he not be musically inspired with the Delta Blues from Memphis, Rockabilly from Jackson and Country from Nashville.
In 1999, Joshua and his brother formed a band called “The Smoking Jackets”. He was the lead vocalist and also played guitar and harmonica. In 2000, The Smoking Jackets released a self produced album called “Youngblood”, and it had tremendous regional success. They traveled around the Southeast, opening for such acts as; The North Mississippi All Stars, Carey Bell, Three Dog Night, and Magic Slim. For two years they were considered THE band to hear in West TN.

After two years with the Jackets, he struck out on his own. He ended up in Europe where he formed his own group and played with several international acts such as; Big Joe Turner and the Memphis Blues Caravan, Xavier Pillac, Jeff Magedson, and Boogie Leg.

He played in France, Germany, Sweden and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. He was there 14 months before coming back and settling in Asheville, NC, then Nashville, TN, and now back in Asheville

Fri 2/26 Brian McGee at the Town Pump

Fri February 26
Brian McGee and The Hollow Speed
at Town Pump Tavern
8:30 pm

Back, way back, before America was America, there were songs. Songs about drinking and death and regret and fear and anger and love. These songs have been all around the world. Each new generation in each place tinkers with them a bit, changing up the words and melodies, making them louder or softer or faster or slower. Brian McGee hasn't died yet, but has done and felt all those other things in spades. And until he does die, these songs are his. They are in his lungs and in his hands.

Having spent the last ten years in Western North Carolina and immersing himself in the rich roots sound of the area, the musician has altered his songwriting palette and taken to fusing his punk rock heritage to some raw country sounds. The result is a blue-collar line in melodic country rock that sounds like the bastard love child of Guthrie and Springsteen.

His self-titled 2008 release, “BRIAN MCGEE & THE HOLLOW SPEED,” blends old-school country romps (Keep On Going) and doses of country-pop (Clouded Glass) with more hooks than a fisherman’s hat. The album maintains the same gritty, rockabilly speed across its entire first half, with the help of Transylvania County Fiddler, Darin Gentry. Further into the album and McGee's punk root's become more prevalent. It's evident in the music's unrelenting thrust and is equal parts rabble-rousing and poignant. This is music for beer-drinking, hard-living, American everymen and it's a joyful thrill ride from beginning to end.

With his band, THE HOLLOW SPEED, Brian McGee is taking parts of punk rock and country music and rubbing them together to ignite his rock and roll which some may call alt.country or folk rock. Call it what you will, Brian McGee & The Hollow Speed pour on the heat and tug on the heart with a live show that has crisscrossed genres. Whether they are playing noisey bars, tourist filled street corners, punk shows or listening rooms, McGee and co. deliver. And this constant consistent delivery is leaving a trail of people talking...and talking alot

Fri 2/26 Ray Bonneville and Randy Weeks at Pisgah

Friday February 26
Ray Bonneville and Randy Weeks
at Pisgah Brewing
7pm

Ray Bonneville is a distinctive artist, a man who cooks up a deep groove, blending a unique percussive electric guitar style, a weathered voice, and soulful rack harmonica into image provoking songs that can be believed. His thumb pulses and thumps, his index finger hooks and brushes out a melody, and his hand slaps the guitar for a snare-like effect.

He sometimes uses a slide, always plays through a Fender tube amp, and brings his foot down on an amplified piece of plywood on the floor for added percussion. It is a powerful and visceral sound with a lot of forward momentum.

If critical raves drove the record charts, Randy Weeks would rightfully be top of the pops. After all, consider just some of the evidence: “An amazing songwriter” (Salon.com). “Smart songwriting and a broad palette of pop music influences” (CD Now). “Amazing musician” (Billboard). “Cooler than an Eskimo beer box” (Houston Press).

And Weeks’ admirers are hardly limited to the music press. “Randy Weeks writes amazingly well crafted, beautifully melodic songs and delivers them with his own brand of laid back vocals and surfboard cool, very hip approach” says Lucinda Williams, who included his song “Can’t Let Go” as the sole cover on her Grammy winning album, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.

Saturday February 20
Blackjack
at The Watershed
9pm

With a strong commitment to classic material matched by originals that rock just as hard, four young boys with an average age of 13 years old have been rapidly progressing in the Southeastern music scene for over three years now. The band has played in well over 75 venues, including charity events, rallies, and festivals throughout the Southeast. The live energy coming from such young talent has been entertaining crowds from motorcycle rallies, music festivals, and school events. This is rock music at its finest. Solid drums, shredding guitars, thumping bass, and wailing vocals have always been in the formula for solid rock music, and these boys get an A+ in each category. The support of their parents doesn’t hurt, either.

Each of the young men are very proud of the fact that their parents are always at their shows supporting all they do (and keeping an eye out, too).

Jeff Markham &
The Last Call
at Town Pump Tavern
9pm

The Last Call is a five piece folk/rock ensemble from Asheville N.C.

There is an unmistakable quality of goodness to the music that we write. Our songs are designed to bring people forward to the stage, to drink, to dance, to smile, and to feel the better half of the human condition. These are songs about love, loss, and perseverance, three feelings that we all can relate. In truth, we became a band because we had to. This sentiment we share because this band, to us, is the only thing we see ourselves doing in life. The potential is far too great to let go unheard.

There is a place in everyone that makes them want to scream for happiness or anger, for defeat or salvation, either way, when you see us perform this is what you'll find. There are no picket fences between us and our audience, our message is straight out, honest and simple. We have come to dance, we have come to scream, and we have come for salvation.

Thu 2/18 The DIrty Guv'nahs at Town Pump Tavern

Thursday February 18th
The Dirty Guv'nahs
at Town Pump Tavern
8:30pm

The Dirty Guv’nahs have been spreading their rock gospel across the Southeast for three years now, showcasing their sound which has been best described as "a passionate, jubilant slice of rock-meets-Americana." In their hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee, they’ve graduated from playing packed out bars where latecomers are turned away from the door, to playing theaters where capacity crowds consistently cram in and press against the stage to hear another three hour helping of what Metro Pulse dubbed, "rock the way God intended."

Nobody enjoys himself more on stage than front man James Trimble, who draws comparisons to Jagger, Morrison, and Cocker, but the show doesn’t revolve around him. Guv'nahs' shows are a family affair, with six members and an ensemble of guests pitching in to weave an aural tapestry of all things Southern music—rock, blues, country, and soul.

The Guv'nahs are interested in creating big songs and big performances. Their voices and their passion on stage are looking to strike a deeper chord, and their rhythms and their words are filled with hope. While they refuse to ignore pain and brokenness inherent to life, their songs gather up all the good that they witness in streets, festivals, bars, churches, parks, and theaters and proclaim what is true—we have plenty to celebrate. We have one another.

Voted Knoxville, Tennessee’s Best Band two years in a row by the Metro Pulse Readers Poll, The Dirty Guv'nahs are paving the way for a new chapter of American Rock and Roll. 2009 marks the release of their first full-length album, which was recorded in January over a period of five days at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, Georgia, with producer David Barbe (REM, Drive by Truckers). Trimble and Michael Jenkins (guitarist) have continued to mature as songwriters, but die hard fans will recognize those signature sing-along choruses. Their message to lovers of rock and roll remains the same: This is not about us, and we all need family to get by.
The Guv'nahs are going back into the studio in December 2009. This time they are headed up to Woodstock, NY to record at hallowed Levon Helm Studios with Grammy winning engineer Justin Guip (Levon Helm, The Black Crowes)

"BEST BAND IN KNOXVILLE"
-as voted by the 2008 and 2009 Metro Pulse Readers Poll (April 24, 2008 / April 16, 2009)

"The Dirty Guv'nahs play rock the way God intended"(Metro Pulse, Knoxville, TN - 1/24/08)

"a passionate, jubilant slice of rock-meets-Americana" ... "the new album stands up in terms of sound next to "Amorica" by The Black Crowes or "Exile on Main Street" by the Rolling Stones. "(The Daily Times, Maryville, TN - 4/09/09)

Since leaving New Orleans’ Dirty Dozen Brass Band in 2006 to make a name of his own, Jamie McLean has been electrifying crowds around the country with his original brand of americana rock. McLean and his burning band have been hitting the highways with the likes of Blues Traveler, Gov’t Mule, Taj Mahal, Dr. John, North Mississippi Allstars, Marc Broussard and many others. His blazing guitar work mixed with soulful vocals and strong songwriting skills have set him apart from being a one-trick pony front man.

To call Jamie’s touring and songwriting prolific would be an understatement. He released and toured behind the 12 tracks from fan favorite “American Heartache” in the fall of 2008 to rave reviews. However, he didn’t stop there. Literally days after the “American Heartache” tour ended he and the band headed straight into the studio to record 17 tracks for Jamie’s follow up album.

Jamie McLean’s latest album “COMPLETELY” has been a lifetime in the making and highlights his penchant for Americana rock, soul and funk as well as his introspective singer/songwriter roots. “Completely” features 11 original songs which embody the miles logged on the highways, the hours spent in studios and on stages. Rather than calling in some of his famous friends to guest on the album Jamie chose to record the music as it was written, just him and the band, which brings out the complete workings of the result. Hence the namesake of the album.

Sun 2/14 Andy Statman Trio at White Horse Black Mountain

The Andy Statman Trio
will give a unique performance of
Klezmer and American music
at White Horse Black Mountain
this coming
Sunday
February 14th
at 4pm
.

Statman is widely recognized by his peers as one of the musicians at the forefront of the klezmer revival of the late 1970s and early ‘80s.

In discovering this instrumental music – the origins of klezmer can be traced to devotional traditions extending back to Biblical times – Statman merged his musical life with the discovery of his spiritual life as a Hasidic Jew.

For more than four decades, Statman has explored and ultimately mastered a multitude of musical genres. As a teenager growing up in New York, he studied bluegrass mandolin with David Grisman. As his interests turned toward the music of John Coltrane, he was mentored by jazz saxophone virtuoso Richard Grando.

Dave Tarras, a popular klezmer musician in the Ukraine who later immigrated to America, taught Statman how to play clarinet. He has appeared on recordings by Stephene Grappelli, Béla Fleck and David Bromberg. Violinist and admirer Itzhak Perlman selected Statman to record with him on a series of klezmer-inspired albums and videos including In the Fiddler’s House, which was released in 1996.

Joining Statman onstage will be percussionist Larry Eagle and bass player Jim Whitney.

"There are those who know Andy Statman as the virtuoso klezmer clarinetist - violinist Itzhak Perlman, for instance, who chose Statman to lead his klezmer album. There are those who know Andy Statman as the down-home mandolin player with a stack of straight-up bluegrass albums to his credit. (I)n Statman's versatile hands is a music that's full of surprises, sophisticated and completely accessible at once." -- The New York Daily News

HAD THERE BEEN a planetarium in 19th-century Galicia, or a kosher deli in Depression-era Kentucky, Andy Statman's music might have been playing in the backgroundeandering through time, geography and culture in a few passionate, organic gusts of music, neither the man nor his inimitable hybrid sound has a very clearly defined "before" or "after."Statman, one of his generation's premier mandolinists and clarinetists thinks of his compositions as "a spontaneous, American-roots form of very personal, prayerful hasidic music, by way of avant-garde jazz."

This small, modest man takes for granted that a performer might embody several worlds in his art, and seems not to recognize that his music, like his story, is extraordinary. "...(A) beautiful and new experience. It has the heart of klezmer music, which Mr. Statman, a clarinet and mandolin virtuoso, is most famous for performing, but it's not klezmer. It has the spirit of the border-pushing jazz of the 60's, but it's not really jazz either. It's the music of Jewish mystics, but interpreted not as a tradition to be preserved but as a spiritual path to be followed in as personal a manner as possible." -- The New York Times

It's a are treat to have someone of Andy Statman's stature come to Black Mountain. Come out for this special 4:00pm Sunday Concert from one of the countries true masters. Tickets are only $10

Sat 2/13 Jenne Sluder at Straightaway Cafe

Sat February 13
Jenne Sluder
at Straightaway Cafe
6pm
Jenne Sluder is a heart-centric artiste born of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She delivers a distinctly beautiful and powerful vocal quality that is emotional, awake and unwavering. Her original work is unabashedly personal and existential and generally narrative.

She gives equal weight to wrapping her chords around stylistically similar and influential predecessors such as Safka, Young and Cohen as well as peers Oberst, Brock, and Hersh.

She draws from a background of diverse musical experience spanning from fronting a college punk rock band to teaching composition of blues and hip-hop in a rural West Virginia middle school; performing sacred songs at spiritual retreats and organizing raucous junkyard bands at youth camps; swapping songs in a small tribal village in Kenya, Africa and speaking/performing alongside Peter Yarrow as part of a conscious aging initiative.

Jenne lives and gardens in her native home of Appalachia, NC and recently acquired a Masters degree in Ecopsychology from Naropa University.

Sat 2/13 Peace Jones at Beacon Pub

Saturday February 13
Peace Jones
at Beacon Pub
9pm

Fronted by wild-eyed Flautist / Guitarist / Songwriter Paul DeCirce, PJ is well known in the Western North Carolina region as an innovative and inventive group. Considered to be adept in a number of cross cutting genres, Peace Jones play everything from 70s soundtrack funk to ska-reggae to rock and roll epics, from mellow country ballads to experimental flute jazz meanderings, to slide guitar hard blues and front porch harmonica jammin'.

Peace Jones reflects the acquired musical exposure of DeCirce, who hails from Syracuse NY. His urban upbringing was in late 70s funk and then 80s style hip-hop, while at the same time a thorough education in his mother's record collection. So it was Bob Dylan and RUN-DMC all at once. This conglomerative mixture results in a kind of Urban Americana.

"Peace Jones is genius; amazing flute with skilled and funkified keys, strings, and percussion. Sometimes reggae-infused and sometimes straight up funk, these guys do it all so well. Totally original stylings with a natural vibe - nothing forced or corporate about Peace Jones - it's 100% from the soul." --IndiePro.Com

"Peace Jones combines elements of old and new that result in a varied list of references to classics and contemporaries, including Beck, Jethro Tull and Cake. The rhythm-centered, funky, bluesy grooves serve as a vehicle for DeCirce's lyrics that often have a political message." -- Jer Cole, The Knoxville Sentinel-News

"There's no stopping this pied piper of funk... Peace Jones, as well as their minions of fans, just wanna have fun, but don't call them unenlightened or unaware. Political incorrectness/correctness doesn't blur their juice-instead, it empowers their rock 'n funk adrenaline." --The Indie, Asheville NC

The band's songs are rooted in American styles of blues, folk and ballad, while at the same time inserting heavy amounts of groove, R&B rhythm and 'hippy hop.' The result is unique only to this band; many regional critics have hailed PJ as some of the most unique and catchy music produced in the region...period.

Sat 2/13 County Farm at Town Pump Tavern

Sat Feb 13
County Farm
at Town Pump Tavern
8:30 pm

A 4-piece string band whose sound ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime, from '20s blues to traditional bluegrass, newgrass and beyond.

Doctor" Jay Mullenax - Guitar, Mandolin, Vocals. From Franklin, WV, Jay Mullenax is the founder of County Farm. Jay has a remarkable ability to remember more tunes than you or I have ever heard. He sings many of the leads for County Farm, and is a formidable picker on mandolin and tenor banjo, among other things. Pickin’ an’ hollerin’ on the Asheville jam scene, Jay brought the “Inmates” together through his musical talent and old-fashioned hard work. Jay does not like work.

Tommy "The Gun" Dudley - Guitar, Vocals. From North Haven CT, Tom Dudley first got into bluegrass as a teenager, frequenting "the Enormous Room" in New Haven, a venue that played host to Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley and others. Tom gravitated toward jazz, and went on to study music at Berklee College in Boston. Tom moved to Asheville in 1995, joined the Asheville bluegrass jam scene, and found a supportive community of musicians. Tom opened Hoot Holler Music in 2007 to promote his CD, "Walkin' to the Bridge", which features Jay Mullenax and Paul Leech, along with a host of WNC pickers and singers.

Neal "Igneous" Crowley - Fiddle, Banjo, Vocals. From Lexington, KY, Neal Crowley has played with The New Kentucky String Ticklers, and Kentucky Wild Horse, among many others. After moving to Asheville, Neal joined County Farm in September, 2001. Neal teaches banjo and fiddle in Asheville. There is no truth to the rumor that Neal's vision is deteriorating.

Don “Easy D” Rawson- Upright Bass, Fiddle, Vocals. Hailing from Georgia and Ohio, inmate number 060872 has thumped the upright bass with County Farm since 2005. Don enjoys playing grass, old time, Cajun, country blues and Western Swing. He blames public radio and obscure record labels from the 1920’s and 1930’s for his musical tastes. Don can also be found fiddling and singing as the founding member of The Cisco Playboys, an Asheville-based Western Swing, honky-tonk, Cajun and rockabilly band.Don arranges his music collection autobiographically and has been known to repeat his mantra often at shows - “When do we get to eat again?”.

Fri 2/12 Skinny Legs and All at White Horse

Friday Feb 12th
Skinny Legs and All
at White Horse Black Mountain
8pm

GREAT BLUES MUSIC FROM

SKINNY LEGS AND ALL

FEATURING

AMERICAN IDOL CONTESTANT
JESSE BARRY

Skinny Legs & All is Asheville's freshest young band whose members range in age from 14 to 19. Don't let their ages fool you - they are "making waves" on the local music scene knocking out rockin' originals and youthful renditions of classic Blues, Funk, & Soul. These gifted performers deliver lip smacking, dance inspiring, mood altering grooves with strong soulful vocals that will lead you on a journey from a slow shuffle to booty grooving madness.

“At heart we’re rockers but we still love to play the blues”

We started off as a middle school elective in 2007. Skinny white boys fronted by a petite young redhead with serious pipes – Holy Koko Taylor! Playing the 60’s & 70’s R&B of our parents generation, it just felt right. When the elective was over – we wanted more.

So became Skinny Legs & All – Asheville, North Carolina’s freshest young band. Our rockin’ originals and youthful renditions of classic Blues, Funk, & Soul are "making waves" on the music scene.

Jesse’s voice has been likened to a combination of Aretha Franklin and Susan Tedeschi. Paul, our senior member, is “straight from the fridge…cool” on the keys. David lays down hot licks on his cherry red guitar. Avi, our youngest cat, plays that thumpin’ bass like he’s been doin’ it since he was in the crib. Colin, our “lucky charm”, keeps it all together as the backbone of our rhythm section.

We deliver lip smacking, dance inspiring, mood altering grooves with strong soulful vocals that will lead you on a journey from a slow shuffle to booty shakin’ madness.

We are proud to be founding members of the Southern Fried Blues Society and were honored to represent them in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase in 2009 and 2010.

6pm

Tim Marsh of the bands Chalwa, Wiseapple, and Get Lost will perform from 6pm til 9pm at the new Straightaway Cafe. Straightaway Cafe is located less than 6 miles south of downtown Black Mountain on Highway 9.

Tim Marsh grew up outside Trenton, NJ where he began playing guitar and singing around the age of 14. With interests in both acoustic and electric music, Marsh began writing his own music while simultaneously learning to play from his own influences. Marsh began performing in high school with his lifelong friend and music cohort Darrell Muller, now of Old School Freight Train fame. The two formed an acoustic duo known as Azure Calm before plugging in to form the rock band Little Gimmick. The acoustic Azure Calm eventually evolved into the psychedelic rock band Grass Dance with the addition of drummer Michael Keating. This band made the jump from New Jersey to Boone, North Carolina. After graduating from Appalachian State University in 2000 with a BS in psychology, Marsh traveled for a while before returning to Boone to revive Wiseapple, an earlier bluegrass project. This band along with the funk and soul band Get Lost remain Marsh's foremost projects.

Sat 12/6 Paul Cataldo at Dynamite Roasting

Saturday Feb 6
Paul Cataldo
at Dynamite Coffee Roasting
10 am

Sat 2/6 Scrapomatic at Pisgah Brewing

Saturday February 6
Scrapomatic
at Pisgah Brewing
8pm

Mike Mattison and Paul Olsen are Scrapomatic, also known to their diehard fans as "The Great American Music Machine." The duo pour their influences in the top and out come perfectly calibrated Americana gems. Scrapomatic have recorded three critically acclaimed blues-roots albums since 2002 -- "Scrapomatic," "Alligator Love Cry" and 2008's "Sidewalk Caesars," which they are currently supporting on a nationwide tour.

Their mission: Make music rooted to the blues canon, but dodge becoming a museum piece by taking up the flag of the modern blues innovators -- Taj Mahal, Nina Simone, Dr. John; artists who used their deep-seeded knowledge of the genre to push it into the future. Needless to say, the Great American Music Machine is not afraid of its influences.

Mattison started his music career as a bass fiddle player with a jones for Ray Charles, whom his mother took him to see seven times before the age of 11. Mattison attended Harvard University, where he served as vice-president of the Harvard Lampoon humor magazine, and graduated in 1991 with a cum laude degree in English and American Literature. He split the country soon-after to sing jazz in Budapest, Hungary. Upon his return, he met Olsen in Minneapolis, three hours into a P-Funk concert. A musical partnership was born.

Olsen began studying guitar in the second grade. At the age of 17, he became the de facto sideman to local blues legend Little Bobby E. His prowess earned him a scholarship to the University of Minnesota, where -- between blues gigs at night -- he studied classical and jazz guitar, and earned a degree in composition.

After being recognized with Minnesota Music Award nominations for Best R&B Group and Best Male Vocalist, the duo decamped to Brooklyn, NY in 1997 and formed Scrapomatic. They proceeded to stomp their way through nearly every venue in the New York area, including Carnegie Hall.

In 2002, Mattison joined the Derek Trucks Band as its lead singer. To date he tours year round with the Allman Brother's slide player and erstwhile Eric Clapton sideman, and has appeared on three DTB albums -- 2003's "Live at the Georgia Theater," 2006's acclaimed "Songlines" and the group's next major-label effort, to-be-named and released in early-2009

Sat 2/6 Every Mothers Dream at Straightaway Cafe

Saturday Feb 6th
Every Mothers Dream
(Jay and Mandy Carter )
at Straightaway Cafe

6 pm

"Jay and Mandy’s vocal harmonies are impeccable. The two blend naturally as if they were born to perform together.”-Dale Allen Hoffman, The Indie

“Jay and Mandy have a way of mingling melodies that turns the nature of harmony on its head.”-Julie Loyd, Singer/Songwriter

Over the years, EMD has gained respect in the regional music community with their own fresh brand of roots music inspired by various folk, funk, rock & roll, country, pop, and jazz musicians – a little something for everyone. The band’s front duo, Jay Kaiser and Mandy Carter, bring intelligent and inspiring songwriting to a mix of impeccable acoustic guitar work, dreamy vocal harmonies, and a driving rhythm section. Every Mother’s Dream delivers a rocking good time while maintaining a refreshingly varied set of music.

The longer story...Jay Kaiser and Mandy Carter have been making music as a pair since 2001. Jay, who was trained in classical guitar at the University of Illinois, moved to Asheville to join a local rock band where Mandy was fresh on the singer/songwriter scene. Noticing the matching stickers on one another’s guitar cases, the two found musical common ground.

Sat 2/6 Fifth On The Floor at Town Pump Tavern

Saturday February 6
Fifth on the Floor
at Town Pump Tavern
8:30pm

Fifth on the Floor started out like all good bands do: on a Friday night over a bottle of Jim Beam. After a few weeks of songwriting, lineup-changes, and hangovers, the grouping of Chris Collins, Robin Polly, Matty Rodgers, and Justin Wells solidified the group dynamic and sound that are instantly identifiable.

Less than a month after inception, Fifth on the Floor were hitting venues all over Kentucky. Soon after, the band was rocking stages in Virginia, Tennessee, Illinois, and Ohio. The songs that developed were recorded on FOTF's debut record, "The Color of Whiskey". The release is as much a melting pot of American music as the band itself, with songs ranging from honky-tonk to southern jam to hard rock, and everything in between. "The Color of Whiskey" is as unabashedly raw and straight-forward as FOTF's stage show.

FOTF wears their country/americana roots on their collective sleeves, yet the rock-infused energy of their live performance is something to behold. Having played over two hundred shows in three years, they've honed their show to an unforgettable experience. A Fifth on the Floor show is not unlike a one night stand: they let their hair down, kick your ass, and, with any luck, you'll remember it in the morning.
