Western North Carolina boasts many musical celebrations throughout the holiday season, but 2009 marks the debut of one of the most unique holiday celebrations in western North Carolina.

Austin, Athens, Asheville ..... each town different but each with an established national reputation for producing quality music and muscians and each of the Triple A music powers is represented at the Honky Tonk Holiday Celebration.

When it comes to honky-tonk atmosphere in WNC, only one place comes to mind. The Town Pump Tavern in Black Mountain NC has been a mainstay in the regional music scene for over 25 years. The club is known for it's unique small-town authentic honky-tonk spirit and national musicians have chosen to include The Town Pump on their tour schedules in spite of it's small size.

When outlaw-country legend, Billy Joe Shaver, looked to include an tourdate in Western NC, he passed over many larger venues and chose to book his show at the Town Pump Tavern where good honky-tonk music is appreciated. Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons are arguably the most well-known Americana band to play the Town Pump since that well-remembered show by Billy Joe Shaver.

Mark Stuart and Bastard Sons are based out of Austin Texas and their music is a perfect example of the Texas Roadhouse sound that has made Austin famous the world over.
His current tour travels to several states over a 3 month period and the Black Mountain appearance is his only stop in North Carolina.

Stuart’s latest CD, Bend in the Road, has kept Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons on the Americana airplay charts and Roots Music charts for several weeks. The recording currently sits at number 33 on the Americana Top 40, sandwiched in between Kris Kristofferson and Uncle Tupelo.

A recent live review in the Santa Barbara News Press commented: "Bands like [Mark Stuart and The Bastard Sons] are the reason country music is still vital…The group takes a classic sound, writes great original songs and plays the hell out of them." Mark Stuart has been a fixture on the national Americana music scene for several years. His recordings and live shows have garnered heavy media attention and extensive airplay. Stuart and the band have toured across America and their popularity carried them to Europe for a recent international tour.

Also on the program is Wink Keziah.

Wink Keziah and his band, Delux Motel, have built a loyal following at the Town Pump Tavern through their appearances over the past few years. Wink embodies the spirit of honky-tonk and outlaw country and has found a perfect fit in the welcoming crowds at Western North Carolina oldest and most authentic honky-tonk bar, The Town Pump Tavern.

His new release, Hard Times, is a great follow-up to his previous CD, Working Songs for the Drinking Class. Hard Times , is the first solo outing for the veteran roots troubadour, who recently relocated to Austin, Texas from his native North Carolina.

Dave Desmelik (http://www.davedesmelik.com/ ) has repeatedly been voted a fan favorite in the annual "Best of" survey of readers of Mountain Xpress, a weekly paper in Asheville NC. Dave Desmelik is a favorite around the region but is also known throughout the country and across Europe. His recordings have made their way onto the Roots Music airplay charts both here and abroad. His CD, "Onlooker" was on Roots Music Report Folk Airplay Chart for three weeks reaching #17. Dave's CD "When Your Eyes Are Closed" reached #6 on the Euro Americana chart back in 2006.

Besty Franck, (http://www.bareknuckleband.net/ )is based out of Athens Georgia where she performs with the band, The Bare Knuckle Band. Betsy and BKB have played venues around the South including the Georgia Theatre, Tasty World, and the 40 Watt in Athens; Bragg Jam in Macon, Ga., Americana Fest in Newnan, Ga., and the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Accompanying Dave and Betsy will be dobroist, Josh Gibbs of Old Fort NC.

Sat 12/5 Dave Foraker & Bob Jaramillo at Straightaway Cafe

Saturday, December 5th
Dave Foraker & Bob Jaramillo
at The Straightaway Cafe
6pm

Dave Foraker and Bob Jaramillo are veteran entertainers who've teamed up for the first time to create a unqiue piano/mandolin duo. Their sound is organic, not contrived... energetic, jazzy & soulful. The piano establishes a groove... Bob's mandolin dances in & out & around... & Dave's gritty voice hits the perfect spaces. With an extensive repertoire, they have the ability to shape the individual performances to the specific needs of each audience.

Their music will excite you... their stories will make you laugh... or, may give you something to ponder... but, most definitely... you will be entertained by two of the area's most uniquely gifted talents.

Dave Foraker is an award-winning blues vocalist whose career began in the mid-60's near St. Louis. Over the last 45 years, he has sung & played with rock, country, beach, variety, blues & gospel groups... & also has had an extensive solo career. Dave has performed for audiences at The Biltmore Estate for the last 12 years & his 2004 homage to Black Gospel, "Thank The Lord" , crossed over onto the Southern Gospel radio charts

Piedmont Entertainment
says : "Dave has the kind of voice that aspiring singers long for... & the seasoning that can only be gained through thousands of performances. I've seen Dave in front of a hot blues band... & as a solo pianist/vocalist at several hotel piano bars. Either way, it's hard to top his voice for soul-filled sincerity."

Bob Jaramillo was born into a musical family that moved from New Mexico to the Swannanoa Valley. He is a veteran musician who has played a variety of instruments in a variety of bands, but his "rapid-fire precison & an ear for the unusual" makes him a much sought-after mandolinist in several genres of music. Bob was the proprietor of Jaramillo's Pickin' Parlor & has played with Malcolm Holcombe, David Cody, "Only Human" & "The Graybeard Ramblers".

Fri 12/4 Chuck Brodsky at White Horse Black Mtn

Friday December 4
Chuck Brodsky
at White Horse Black Mountain
9pm

White Horse Black Mountain joins in the traditional Holly Jolly festivities in town with 2 great concerts for one price. Opening the evening at 8pm will be The Warren Wilson Folk Choir.

Followed immediately by everyones favorite singer/songwriter, Chuck Brodsky.

A down to earth musical storyteller, with adry, barb-witted social commentary combined with a deep underlying compassion, Brodsky knows that the best stories are the little things in the lives of everyday people trying to muddle through with some grace. His great gift as a writer is to infuse these stories with humanity and humor, making them resonate profoundly with his listeners. His spoken introductions to his songs can be as spellbinding as his colorful lyrics, which he brings to life with a well-travelled voice and a delivery that's natural and conversational. His groove-oriented strumming and fingerpicking draw on influences from the mountains of western North Carolina where he now lives, and from lots of different good old traditional folk stuff of all kinds.

Chuck has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Ireland for 12 years, playing at folk festivals such as Tønder in Denmark, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Kerrville, Philadelphia, and Strawberry, as well as the Lincoln Center Out of Door series in New York, among others. Some of the artists he's appeared in concert with include Arlo Guthrie, Janis Ian, Pete Seeger, Tim O'Brien, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, John Hartford, Greg Brown, Gillian Welch, Dick Gaughan, Tom Paxton, Ferron, Richie Havens, Patty Larkin, Steve Forbert, The Kingston Trio, and Christine Lavin. His influences include John Hartford, Mark Twain, Nic Jones, Bob Dylan, Lowell George, Jackson Browne, Steve Forbert, The Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, and David Massengill.

"He is an extroadinary talent in my opinion.
I would place him in the Dylan-Guthrie-Prine league without question.
His lyrics are drawn from the lives of everyday people and his acoustic guitar playing is quite amazing."
---BBC Belfast (Tony McAuley)

"One of the finest singer-songwriters in America.
There are alot of good ones, but when it comes to the
really great ones it boils down to a select few -- he’s one of them"
---Larry Groce - Mountain Stage (National Public Radio)

Fri 12/4 WSNB at Town Pump Tavern

Friday December 4th 2009
WSNB (We Sing Nasty Blues)
at Town Pump Tavern
8:00pm
WSNB is rock solid swamp blues....straight from the Mississippi Delta. WSNB stands for We Sing Nasty Blues and their brand of nasty blues has the grittiness that bridges the Delta to Chicago blues spectrum.

Willie Shane's growling voice and soulful harp playing are indicative of his Mississippi roots and Nathan's slide work is the perfect compliment to Shane. The hard driving rhythm section of Jason & Clay is steady and persistent, like pistons of a big block engine. The lyrics are intellegent, sometimes witty...covering subjects from lust, love, and insanity to Hurricane Katrina and the war in Iraq. WSNB's unique lyrics and homespun style of music is straight from soul goodness. Like a train coming through your front door, WSNB will make your hips shake, your feet move, & your big toe jump up in yo' boot!

A TOP 10 FINALIST at the 2007 INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE in Memphis, Tennessee, WSNB was selected by the editors of Billboard Magazine as one of the top independent bands in the Southeast. Their recent release, Oktibbeha County, garnered widespread airplay and kept them on the Americana charts for weeks.

WSNB makes it's home in the Western Foothills of North Carolina but their real home is on the road as they maintain a full touring schedule.

Fri 12/4 The Secret B-Sides at Pisgah Brewing

Friday December 4
The Secret B-Sides
at Pisgah Brewing
8pm

Based in the bohemian stronghold of Asheville, North Carolina, the Secret B-Sides produce a fresh new sound, rooted in the classic feel of Soul music and updated with the sensibilities of Hip Hop and modern R&B.

The Secret B-Sides groove is built on the danceable core of drums and electric bass, laid down by Robin Tolleson (Mr. T,) and Shayne Heather, respectively. Juan Holladay contributes fly lyrical play, and compositional chocolate à la nylon-stringed, electric guitar and vinyl-smooth vocals.

Hammond organ, Wurlitzer, Clavinet, and Voyager keys are all tastefully dealt by the Jeff K'norr, like yummy sugar sprinkles.

Usually in cohorts with the Big Time Horns section, and most likely conspiring with Charles Stewart (the one you know as CHACH) the B-sides are able to create a multifaceted sound aggregate from a talent pool sometimes adding up to eight or more members at any given point in the time-space-attitude continuum.

You can think of the B-Sides like a giant, purple crystal patch nestled deep in Asheville's subterrania, if you want to.
