Wink Keziah and his band, Delux Motel, have built a loyal following at the Town Pump Tavern through their appearances over the
past few years. Wink embodies the spirit of honky-tonk and outlaw country and has found a perfect fit in the welcoming crowds at Western North Carolina oldest and most authentic honky-tonk bar, The Town Pump Tavern. His new release, Hard Times, is a great follow-up to his previous CD, Working Songs for the Drinking Class. Hard Times , is the first solo outing for the veteran roots troubadour, who recently relocated to Austin, Texas from his native North Carolina.
Wink Keziah describes himself as an urban hillbilly but his music is the stuff of rural working class America. . His sound nourished by moonshine, draped in kudzu and road-tested in clubs and barrooms sprawled across the country. Wink Keziah and Delux Motel are quickly becoming a favorite among fans and media alike with their high powered, super tight brand of scorching outlaw country.
Wink Keziah and Delux Motel are proud members of The Americana Music Association, The Roots Music Association and ASCAP.
"Wink Keziah plays the pure, hardscrabble country-tinged rock that Parsons pioneered way back when… It's rock 'n' roll with a crying pedal steel guitar and songs about the hard life and honky-tonk dreams of the blue collar Joe." -- The Savannah Morning News

Six of the best players that Western North Carolina has to offer comprise this incredibly energetic and soulful group. Sat 12/26 Jazz the Ripper at White Horse Blk Mtn
Jazz The Ripper has a unique sound that can't be summed up by the boundaries of genre. It is only limited to the creative juices running through the
brains of these young musicians. Jazz The Ripper never shows their age in their playing, only their energy.
JTR started out in the fall of 2006 as a jam band. We played together a few months and wrote a song or two. A few band members came and went, but we got serious when Will and James joined the band. We wrote some songs, learned some covers, and played a few gigs around Asheville, trying out our "style". As we wrote more of our own material, each one of us contributing to every song, we began to realize our potential, and that with our combined efforts, we could create a new and unique jazz/funk fusion sound. Recently, our original bass player has rejoined the band.
All of us seniors are college bound to schools of music: Joe Hamilton and Julian Samal, our Sax players, are both headed to UNC-G to the School of Music Jazz Performance program. Our Drummer, Jordan Arnold, is headed to NorthWestern University School of Music Percusion program. Our Bassist, Ted Marks, is headed for Berklee School of Music.
Sat 12/26 Dave Foraker & Bobby Jaramillo at Straightaway Cafe
Dave Foraker and Bob Jaramillo are veteran entertainers who've teamed up for the first time to create a unqiue piano/mandolin duo. Their sound is organic, not contrived... energetic, jazzy & soulful. The piano establishes a groove... Bob's mandolin dances in & out & around... & Dave's gritty voice hits the perfect spaces. With an extensive repertoire, they have the ability to shape the individual performances to the specific needs of each audience.
Their music will excite you... their stories will make you laugh... or, may give you something to ponder... but, most definitely... you will be entertained by two of the area's most uniquely gifted talents.
Dave Foraker is an award-winning blues vocalist whose career began in the mid-60's near St. Louis. Over the last 45 years, he has sung & played with rock, country, beach, variety, blues & gospel groups... & also has had an extensive solo career. Dave has performed for audiences at The Biltmore Estate for the last 12 years & his 2004 homage to Black Gospel, "Thank The Lord" , crossed over onto the Southern Gospel radio chartsPiedmont Entertainment says : "Dave has the kind of voice that aspiring singers long for... & the seasoning that can only be gained through thousands of performances. I've seen Dave in front of a hot blues band... & as a solo pianist/vocalist at several hotel piano bars. Either way, it's hard to top his voice for soul-filled sincerity."
Bob Jaramillo was born into a musical family that moved from New Mexico to the Swannanoa Valley. He is a veteran musician who has played a variety of instruments in a variety of bands, but his "rapid-fire precison & an ear for the unusual" makes him a much sought-after mandolinist in several genres of music. Bob was the proprietor of Jaramillo's Pickin' Parlor & has played with Malcolm Holcombe, David Cody, "Only Human" & "The Graybeard Ramblers".www.myspace.com/davidalanforaker

Thu 12/24 The Wilderness Act at White Horse Blk Mtn

The White Horse in Black Mountain
This all-ages concert promises to be a memorable one, featuring the debut of "The Wilderness Act", an exciting new folk-duo with ancient celtic influence and powerful presentation.
"We really appreciate the White Horse for welcoming us and opening the doors on Christmas Eve. It is rare that songwriters can debut in a venue of this caliber and present new music to unassuming ears. It will be a bit mysterious for the audience. I expect a very magical night." - Lance and Crissa Moore, The Wilderness Act
Lance Moore describes The Wilderness Act as: "guitar . hammer dulcimer . voices . piano . original . ancient . Celtic . spirited . mystery . harmony . love . hope . humor . peace . passion . intensity . interested?"
Regional music fans will remenber Lance and Crissa from their previous group, Gypsy Bandwagon.
Carissa Moore, piano, studied music and science in college, earning a degree in both music and science. She has performed with the rock band Woven Hearts and Irish-music band Celtic Knot. Her piano work is as stunning as her fiddle playing. Guitarist, Lance Moore, spent his entire childhood roaming all over the west. Always the adventurer, his desert treks and mountain explorations have led to beautiful and remote locales. He did play with several moderately unsuccessful bands in the 80s, but spent all his money on hiking and skiing addictions. Later moved to the Great Smoky Mountains and answered Carissa's ad for a moody, Irish guitarist. She got the guitarist - he got a wife!
Wed 12/23 Woody Wood at The Blackbird Restaurant
The skinny white boy from the mountains of
With a background as diverse as his music, Woody converges elements from all walks of life to present music that contains a sense of familiarity like no other.
His songs are stories that are delivered as if he was giving his first account and confession of the subject matter.
When he sings he SPEAKS to you,not at you.
“I think the most important thing is that you have to be completely honest in your music,” Wood says. And he bears it evidently and without shame.
One look at the long list of artists he has shared the stage with exemplifies his diversity, not to mention respect from his musical peers. From Jimmy Martin to
Leon Russel, R.L. Burnside to Warren Haynes, country music superstar Sara Evans,or Carlos Santana,Woody has played and learned from some of those who have helped shape music into what it is today.Growing up, Woody was steeped in the knowledge, legacy, and traditions of Bluegrass music. His father, A.L. Wood, and his band, The Smokey Ridge Boys, toured the traditional bluegrass circuit extensively alongside legends like Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers and The Seldom Scene. Tagging along with his father to various festivals, Woody experienced first hand the power of music and the etiquette that goes into it.
As he got older his appreciation of music grew to much wider horizons. Soul, R&B, blues, folk, rock, jazz and world music now started to blend with the sounds of his childhood.
As a professional musician, Woody was a pivotal member of the Blue Rags, with whom he had success with National media coverage (MTV) and international tours.
Woody was also recorded and performed with a slew of New Orleans and WNC’s finest musicians in what was a blending of musical styles, combining New Orleans Jazz and Bluegrass. The Blue Brass Sessions featured members of Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Larry Keel,Troy”Trombone Shorty” Andrews, and many others.
Woody delivers his music with all the soul, power, and energy that have made him renowned as a musician’s musician,
sets the stage and then proceeds to burn it down with original material that breathes a new fire of of passion and honesty."

“There are a lot of common talents in the world, But there are very few rare talents, and I feel that Kellin is a rare, uncommon talent. Her songs have the ability to take someone gently by the wrist and tell them a story...”-Billy Corgan, of The Smashing Pumpkins"
"Kellin Watson isn't a girl with a guitar. She's a girl with a guitar, the ability to craft intelligent, inspired songs, and she's armed with a real-deal, blues-rock voice. It's a voice, unlike the sugar-sweetness of today's constant supply of disposable pop idols, which doesn't falter." Jambase
"Velvet Truckstop are building a solid foundation and have certainly absorbed lessons from the right teachers. This band has the right elements and perhaps most importantly, the aching hunger that drives real musicians. I could see them carving their names on those tall lonesome Southern pines with the heavy hitters."Sarah Hagerman, Jambase.com
"If kissing the mountain air they breathe over in Black Mountain, North Carolina makes you sound anything like Velvet Truckstop lead singer Jamie Dose, then the air must be sweeter up there. " -Brad Hodge, Honest Tune Magazine Nashville T.N.
Fresh off the release of their self titled debut album, Velvet Truckstop’s music represents a culmination of the band’s hard earned experiences and travels. What you get are tight vocal harmonies, searing guitars, heavy keyboard driven groove and a tight rhythm section that holds it all together

James Richards
at The Straightaway Cafe
6:00pm

James Richards makes music to live but not for a living, balancing music alongside graduate school, family and work. While Richards put musical roots in Asheville, NC in 2000 to live out his dream as a performing songwriter, he currently saves his voice and guitar mostly for campfire sing-a-longs, benefits, house parties, and places of worship.
Richards also collaborates with local musicians, particularly as a bass player for Night's Bright Colors.
A classicly trained singer steeped in self-described acousticfunkgrass, Richards looks to Lightnin' Hopkins, Otis Redding, and Peter Gabriel among others for inspiration.
Fri 12/18 Lance Mills at White Horse Black Mountain
Born in Indiana, Lance Mills started singing in front of people at age 17, and got a guitar the following year. He played in rock and blues cover bands until moving to Western NC in 1994. Lance played with Second String for four years. He then fronted Blue Monday, and currently performs as Lance Mills and the Cavemen.Lance describes his music as "Truditional" stating that truditional music is new music that sounds old. authentic, genuine, sincere and heartfelt. a fresh pour of coffee in your grandad's favorite cup, a well worn pair of jeans with a brand new patch on the knee, real songs that lend a little comfort. In addition to being a seasoned performer, Lance is a cherished and prolific songwriter. His songs recorded by a who’s who of rising starts in Roots, Country and Bluegrass music including The Steep Canyon Rangers, Songs From the Road Band, The Biscuit Burners and Town Mountain

Woody Wood and Hollywood Red
As a professional musician, Woody was a pivotal member of the Blue Rags, with whom he had success with National media coverage (MTV) and international tours. His trio, Hollywood Red, amps it up for full bore, rock. Time and time again, Woody Wood and Hollywood set the stage and proceed to burn it down with original material that breathes the fire of rock n’ roll. As artistic alchemists, this trio melds their musical styling into an intricate and expansive sound. From the first note to the last, there is no mistaking that they are the real deal.
BlackJack
With a strong commitment to classic material matched by originals that rock just as hard, four young boys with an average age of 13 years old have been rapidly progressing in the Southeastern music scene for over three years now. The band has played in well over 75 venues, including charity events, rallies, and festivals throughout the Southeast. The live energy coming from such young talent has been entertaining crowds from motorcycle rallies, music festivals, and school events. This is rock music at its finest. Solid drums, shredding guitars, thumping bass, and wailing vocals have always been in the formula for solid rock music, and these boys get an A+ in each category. The support of their parents doesn’t hurt, either. Each of the kids are very proud of the fact that their parents are always at their shows supporting all they do (and keeping an eye out, too).

Fri 12/18 Matt Urmy at Town Pump Tavern
out in July 2009, and a published book of poetry. At his performances he weaves spoken word poetry into his folk-blues style of storytelling and singing. You can catch him solo, or with his band, The Revelators.
Passion is a powerful force. The records keep getting written and recorded, each year, his craft improves, and his voice is more unique. His talent combined with his work ethic, and his compelling love for music and language keep moving him forward...
"Urmy is his own man, blessed with a tuneful, Knopfler-esque baritone that’s as well suited to singing as to the spoken word. A student of the late Maori healer Hohepa “Papa Joe” Delamere, Urmy does healing work himself, and the impulse to uplift comes through. But if that sounds too “New Agey,” don’t let it deter you: The majority of the material recalls the groovin’ country soul of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers or the thoughtful folk of John Prine"— The Nashville Scene

Fri Dec 11 Dave Desmelik at Beacon Pub

Fri 12/11 Ol Hoopty at White Horse
From the Asheville Citizen-Times:"Ol’ Hoopty is an Asheville based band that, like its namesake, runs as smoothly as a slant-six engine with a crankcase full of 10W-30 right out of the can. With a style that’s reminiscent of Little Feat, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Delbert McClinton, Ol’ Hoopty rocks the house with organ-based soul grooves and surprisingly smart original songs.
They might throw in a cover by Louis Jordan or Jimmy Smith, just before speeding off onto their own “Dumpsta Funk” or “World’s Changing”. The individual band members have played all over the US and Europe, opening shows for The Police, Iggy Pop, The B-52s, and a zillion others, but they now they spend their time writing and recording, and fixing their wrecked ol’ cars with duck tape and Bondo."
From Ol Hoopty:"We call it Organ-ic Rock 'n Soul, but it's really just a big, spicy gumbo of all the things we all grew up listening to. We like to take our time and keep that groove cooking, inspired as we are by people like Jimmy Smith, Booker T. and the MG's and the Muscle Shoals crew."

Fri 12/11 Bobby G Blues at Town Pump
began a love affair with the blues greats -- Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf --during his Detroit days. He toured and recorded with the 70's rock band -- Frijid Pink -- until they disbanded, and then moved on tour the U.S. with OuterDrive. Since then he's played with B. B. King, James Peterson, blues legend Diamond Teeth Mary, Nazareth, Pat Travers and Les Dudek, The Outfield, the James Gang and so many small bands, he can't remember them all.For more than 12 years, the original Bobby G Band -- with bassist Eddie E. and drummer Gary Guzzardo (formerly with Marshall Tucker Band) was renown on Florida's Suncoast for their house rockin' blues that earned not only 'best of best' accolades from fans, but made them a sought after crowd pleaser by almost every blues club and festival in the Tampa-Sarasota-Bradenton area.
Always an innovator, Bobby still pushes the envelope with intricate chord progressions - now combined with his own cutting edge musical production of seven other instruments. Yes, he played them all himself, arranging and recording each track as the "band" for his one-man show. A heart-racing electric tour de force that is absolutely astonishing!
Bobby G appears in Western NC area as a house-rockin' one man show or accompanied by Tim Allen (blues harp) and Dave Todd (percussion).

Fri 12/11 Floating Action at Pisgah Brewing
After Seth Kauffman’s 2006 debut and 2007 follow-up left critics drawing comparisons as diverse as Motown to the Carribean, Kauffman returns as Floating Action. This April, Park The Van Records will release Floating Action’s self-titled debut, and Kauffman’s most accomplished work to date.Once again Kauffman has performed and recorded virtually every note himself at his home studio, and – in an age where obsessive computer editing and auto-tuning are taking the humanity out of even most home recordings – once again his refreshingly organic approach to making music is receiving rave reviews:
“He invokes those classic, soul staples of deep and penetrating bass lines, simple but ideal and perfect lyrics about the troubles of love and jingling guitars. He gives you the jitters and the absolute sway is all his." (Daytrotter).

Thu 12/10 Silver Dagger Bluegrass at Town Pump
A recognized act in today's roots music scene, Silver Dagger brings together young and energetic talent from the country's leading music programs. Alumni of East Tennesee State's acclaimed bluegrass program, Grace Van't Hof and Ricky Cooper, Berklee
alumnus, Ashleigh Caudill, and national touring veteran, Matt Purinton, work a stage like old hands. Weaving in and out of their solos and vocal harmonies, the group rivals seasoned artists many years their senior. Their different backgrounds and four home states influence their uniques instrumental styles. 2009 marks Silver Dagger's first complete touring season. The group's clever originals and covers of bluegrass favorites are sure to captivate any audience! What people are saying about Silver Dagger:
"Silver Dagger is a dynamic acoustic band...and one of my favorites! They have great vocals that blend seamlessly with their controlled, powerful instrumental work. This fine group showcases a wealth of American and Bluegrass music...as well as expertly presenting the best of their own original songs. I look to these young folks to make important contributions to our music heritage for a long time!" -Marc Pruett (Kentucky Thunder, Balsam Range)
Band:
Ashleigh Caudill started out playing music with her family when she was young. While attending Berklee College of Music in Boston she had the opportunity to soak up the New England music scene playing with groups such as the New England Bluegrass Band, Joy Kills Sorrow, Lincoln Meyers and The String Alliance, and April Verch. She has performed live on XM radio, The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, The Berklee Performance Center and in countless bars and clubs in New England and on the Front Range of Colorado. An accomplished bluegrass musician and songwriter, she recently released her debut solo album, I'm Not Fallin,' featuring some of the most talented musicians in New England, as well as many of her original tunes.
Born and raised in Western Michigan, Grace Van't Hof studied violin and piano at a young age until she discovered the banjo in high school. She built a 5-string prototype that won 2nd place in
a statewide Science Olympiad. Before moving to North Carolina, she studied in the Bluegrass music program at East Tennessee State University after receiving a scholarship based on banjo performance. Grace has also studied Voice and Visual Art at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. After relocating to Asheville, Grace has performed and recorded with musical artists such as Buncombe Turnpike, the Steep Canyon Rangers, Brad Sweitzer and the Young Sophisticates, the Trainwreks, and Taylor Martin and Friends. Apart from bluegrass, she also works as a graphic designer and artist.Matt Purinton has been playing music since he was just a kid. His parents had always been fans of Doc Watson, Merle Watson and Sam Bush, so its no surprise that this influence carried over to their son. Growing up in upstate South Carolina, Matt was exposed to a ton of traditional music and with the Reedy River Boys and Big Iron Bluegrass he played all over the South East. When he got an offer to play full time in Colorado he jumped at the chance. Upon moving to the great Rocky Mountains he met up with Viktor Barns and toured throughout California, Utah, Nevada, as well as Colorado. Now that Matt has become a fixture in the Northern Colorado music scene, he's moving to North Carolina to join the rest of Silver Dagger.
Ricky Cooper was born and raised in East Tennessee. Studying piano and listening to his father's country records in his youth instilled a love for music in him. An alumnus of ETSU's bluegrass program, Coop learned bluegrass standards from legends like Raymond McClain and Jack Tottle. He has toured around the southeast with the bluegrass and swing band, the Clear Liquor Pickers. Coop is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, proficient on everything from upright bass to piano, but his real strength are his creative guitar stylings. This was proven at Rockygrass '08 where Coop took home second place in his first guitar competition. His outstanding guitar playing, songwriting and bluegrass singing greatly contribute to the Silver Dagger sound

With an improvisational approach, as well as frequent guest soloists, VJP plays a new show, every show. Vertigo Jazz Project is known for their compositions and performances through the jazz idiom. But people often ask “Is this Jazz?” VJP has taken on the task of bridging the gap b/w multiple genres of music such as Jazz, Funk, Latin, Rock, Jam, Avant, Classical, World, Country, but always maintaining a distinctively recognizable element of jazz. VJP takes their varied experience and creates original compositions of their easily recognizable form of music; paying homage to the aforementioned styles, with heavy emphasis on the jazz, soul jazz and world elements.
Wed 12/9 The Honeycutters at The Blackbird Restaurant
8pm
(formerly the Bee's Knees) came together in the Spring of 2007. Since their first live performance at the Westville Pub in May of 07, when the band included only singer/songwriter Amanda Anne Platt and lead guitarist Peter James, they have steadily gained momentum, audience,
and band members. With the release of their first studio album, "Irene", the group has begun to expand their listening area to the greater Southeast. Their original americana, ranging from country ballads to honky-a-billy and blues, is a memorable blend of catchy melody, skillful composition, and honest songwriting.

Sat 12/5 Dave Foraker & Bob Jaramillo at Straightaway Cafe
