Wed 9/30 Angi West at Blackbird Restaurant

Wednesday Sept 30
Angi West
at Blackbird Restaurant
8pm

Berklee-trained, keyboard-wielding Angi West hails from the mountains of western North Carolina, Cullowhee to be specific. Even as a child, West was surrounded by people who believed in her music. The coaxing of old mountain women in calico dresses, elementary school janitors, Baptist preachers, and opinionated uncles convinced a small and slightly pitiful child that she was pretty damn special. So many people told Angi West she could sing that she eventually started to believe them. Now, in defiance of her disability (ocular cutaneous albinism), West writes across genres, while always calling her songs back to the mountains and to an abiding love of early operatic melodies.

"West boasts a delightfully eclectic vocal style that conjures at times Feist's forceful sensuality, Tori Amos' elegant swoops ‘n' purrs, Joni Mitchell's upper-register free-form flights and Bjork's chirpy eccentricity, all put to dramatic effect against a stately-but-edgy backdrop of piano, bass and percussion occasionally augmented by horns. Those Appalachian roots shine through at unexpected moments: the a capella "Let Them Sleep," what with West's subtle slide into a regional twang, could be a vintage folksong handed down for generations; the droning arrangement of "Home in Heaven" and West's gospel-informed vocal suggest the mountain Celtic tradition and time spent as a youth singing in a church choir." -Blurt

Whatever tag line is used to describe her music – post-folk, Appalachian anti-pop, operatic avant-garde folk rock, whimsy – she remains true to the melodies that move her and writes straight from the loneliness and hope that surround everyone.

Fri 9/25 Cowboy Jack Clement at White Horse Black Mountain

Friday September 25
Cowboy Jack Clement
with Marley's Ghost
at White Horse Black Mountain
8:00 pm

The Most Famous Musician You Never Heard Of......

Tonight's show is a rare treat....an opportunity to hear a fine songwriter and performer ...who happens to be a Nashville legend and among the most knowledgeable persons about the people and places at the center of an American art form.

For more than half a century, Jack Clement has found himself surrounded by some of the world's greatest singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists. This was no accident. His brilliance was recognized early on by Sam Phillips whose Sun Records studio was the cradle of rock 'n' roll, and over the years top new talent has been drawn to Jack's door and has followed him like the mythical Pied Piper.

Jack Clement is a visionary maverick with a career which included song publishing, music and film production, a record company and recording studios and amassed 16 BMI award and 25 gold records along the way. He produced records at the legendary Sun Records studio in Memphis where he helped launch the careers of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash.

Clement would go on to work with most of Nasheville's top stars including Waylon Jennings, Charley Pride, George Jones, Roy Orbinson, Ray Stevens, Doc Watson, John Hartford, Hank Williams Jr, and others. He was also sought out by musicians from outside the confines of Nashville such as U2, Louis Armstrong, and Townes Van Zandt.

While best know of his work producing and writing hits of Nashville stars, Clement also had a successful career of his on as a performer and recording musician.

Clement talks about helping to launch the career of Jerry Lee Lewis
  • So, Jerry Lee came back, and sure enough, he played something like Chet on the piano -“Wildwood Flower" and I enjoyed it. I thought it was real nice, but it wasn't what you would want to make a record out of, you know, when Rock and Roll was king. At that point country music, the bottom had kind of dropped out of country music. The only person I can recall that was sort of hot country right then, was George Jones. So Jerry Lee did that instrumental bit on the piano. I said, "What else you do?" He said, "I play mostly country." At that time he was playing in a little ole place in Ferriday, Louisiana. He would play the piano with his left hand, and the drums with his right hand, and he had another guy playing bass with him, or something, and that was it. I said, "Do you know any Rock and Roll songs," and he said "No". He said "I'll learn some". I said, "Why don't you do that".

Fri 9/25 Kort McCumber at The Town Pump Tavern

Fri September 25
Kort McCumber
at The Town Pump Tavern
8:30pm

Kort McCumber knows, writes, plays, and sings good songs--steeped in tradition, honed over a musical lifetime and brought to life in the present. Americana at its best, equal parts folk, country blues and bluegrass with a healthy dose of something fresh. Good songs well rendered. Winner of the 2008 Flat Rock Music Festival Songwriting Competition, McCumber is returning to North Carolina for a special concert at the Town Pump Tavern.

The Genre:
Americana: equal parts folk, bluegrass, country, blues, rock and roots music

The Instruments:
guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, piano, bouzouki, cello, electric bass, upright bass, and more.

The Story:

“I travel these highways/and listen to the wheels roll along/just telling my story …” Simple and true. That’s what singer songwriter Kort McCumber does. To the tune of about 50,000 miles in the last year alone. “I don’t know for sure,” says Kort, “but I’d guess I’m creeping up on a half a million miles over the last ten years.” That’s a lot of miles, a lot of smiles, and a fair share of calamities, mishaps and broke-down rigs along the way. Not all the stories are born when the “wheels roll along.” Some roll along when the wheels don’t. “The road is tough,” admits Kort, “but I love it in a ‘man-am-I-crazy-or-what’ kinda way.”

While he readily admits to loving the ‘playing music part of it … anywhere, anytime’, it’s the in between times that get tough; the getting there, getting set up, getting packed up and getting up to get goin’ to the next show that makes the road wearisome. That and the fact that he misses his home, wife, dogs “and the sanity they afford me. But when I weigh it all out, I know this is what I want to do. This is what I gotta do.” Over the last ten years, Kort has honed his skills as a working musician playing more than 1000 live shows throughout the U.S. and Europe. Kort writes, plays and sings Americana Music - equal parts rock, folk, country, blues and bluegrass, with a healthy dose of something fresh.

After moving to Colorado in 2003, the music took a decidedly more country/bluegrass turn and dug deeper into the roots of his Scotch-Irish heritage. In 2007, he released his sixth CD, “Lickskillet Road,” featuring appearances from Vince Gill, Sally Van Meter, Don Conoscenti and more. Last year, he was back in the mixing booth putting the finishing touches on a live DVD, captured at the famed Boulder Theater on an awesome night that saw no less than fifteen great musicians join him on stage. Somewhere along the line he also found time to compete in, and win, a couple nationally known singer songwriter contests. Kort weaves a rich and diverse tapestry of musical experience, skill and energy into each and every one of his many musical endeavors.

A classically trained pianist & cellist (he learned from his mom, Joy Myers, who played for the Jacksonville Symphony for more than two decades) today Kort plays guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, piano, bouzouki, cello, bass, and more. He also plays golf. Or at least he used to – NCAA Division I golf. His Father Jim owns McCumber Golf, a worldwide leader in course design and operations and Uncle Mark spent nearly 30 years on the PGA Tour, playing today on the Senior Tour. “People ask me why I chose music over golf,” says Kort. “Well, I didn’t. I didn’t choose music, it chose me.” Americana music fans are glad it did. Live and in person or through the magic of recording technology, you gotta check out this hard driving and hard driven musician.

Fri 9/25 The Cheeksters at Pisgah Brewing

Friday Sept 25
The Cheeksters
at Pisgah Brewing
8pm

“The Cheeksters have the kind of back-story that should be turned into a screenplay. American expatriate in London (Shannon) strikes up a conversation with a stranger on a train (Mark) sparks fly- they marry- form a band, and eventually land in Asheville, North Carolina. And their latest record “Movers and Shakers” would be the perfect soundtrack to such a film --- I’m thinking 2003’s “Love, Actually here—10 bouncy pop songs that sound as if they should be blaring in a boisterous pub.” --David Menconi –The News and Observer

...sounding like reanimated Zombies on their new Movers and Shakers, former Nashville songwriter-frontman Mark Casson and bassist-vocalist Shannon Hines Casson collapse their voluminous record collection into 10 unabashedly groovy songs whose sonic DNA tangles strands of R&B, glam, Britpop and bubblegum... Fri 9/25 Kellin Watson and Michael Bellar at Blk Mtn Ctr for the Arts

Friday, September 25
Kellin Watson
with Michael Bellar
and the As-Is-Ensemble
at The Black Mountain Center for the Arts
8pm

A native of Black Mountain, daughter of musicians, kin to western NC music legends with the same last name, Kellin Watson grew up with roots in jazz, Celtic and old-time Appalachian music. Her stage presence was honed in musical theater and in college rock bands. She learned to play guitar at age 13, and by age 16 had released her first demo of her own songs. Her first album, Paper Bird, hit the charts in 2003 and was named number 5 out of the top 10 albums for WNC within a month. Her music is a blend of blues, folk, jazz, rock, and pop. Her lyrics belie her youth with their earnestness and authenticity.

Besides performing at an UPBEAT! Concert at the Center for the Arts in February, 2007, and holding a CD Release concert here later that year, Kellin has performed at Legends in Boone, at the Grey Eagle, the Orange Peel, and at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, as well as opening for Jessica Simpson at the Alltel Pavilion in Raleigh; in New York she has played The Neighborhood Theatre and The Lions Den.

Opening for Watson is Michael Bellar and the AS-IN Ensemble. The AS-IS Ensemble is the musical home of composer/keyboardist Michael Bellar. This improvisationally eclectic, alt-jazz group has opened for John Scofield, JFJO and has upcoming performances scheduled with Tea Leaf Green and Medeski, Martin and Wood. The group has formerly been the house band at the world-famous Blue Note jazz club in New York City and performed at such venues as Avery Fischer Hall at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and the JVC and Bell Atlantic Jazz Festivals in NYC.

Originally from Hickory NC, Bellar now lives in NYC as he is such a sought after player and stays busy with his craft. In 2003 however, he also served as the resident composer of Terpsicorps Theater of Dance, a contemporary/multi-media dance and performance company based in western N.C.

Admission is a $10 donation at the door.

Thu 9/24 Aaron Price with The Zealots at Town Pump Tavern

Thursday Sept 24
Aaron Price
and The Zealots
at Town Pump Tavern
8:30pm

The Zealots will come at you with everything they've got, including some momentous songs. Fronted by the Carolina legend George Terry, this band converts new Zealots with every appearance. Zealots' songs deal with the always-touchy subjects of religion, taxes, and death (not to mention love). Lazy conformists beware of these sharp hooks which drop from the sky like viscious arch-angels.

Aaron Price is a musician, producer, and composer currently residing in Asheville, North Carolina. A lifelong musician who began playing piano at the age of 2, Aaron is known as a multi-faceted artist, equally at home on stage, in the theater pit, or in the studio. In 2005 alone, he led the band for a theater production of the musical HAIR, produced several records, and released a solo piano recording under his own name.

Aaron arrived in Asheville in 1997. Within a year he formed the cabaret act Vendetta & The Nines with native chanteuse Kelly Barrow and bassist Mike Holstein. The same year he opened Collapseable Studios, setting up and cutting records in his apartment, working with engineer and bass player Bill Reynolds. Price and Reynolds engineered and produced Vendetta & The Nines and Valorie Miller’s Analog in 1999. Both albums received steady air play on WNCW radio, known for its support of regional music. The same year Vendetta & The Nines toured the UK, and Asheville’s Mountain Xpress called Aaron Price "The man behind the Asheville sound."
Conspicuously absent from Price’s resume is an eponymous pop album. While he regularly emits singles through radio and internet he seems to be in no hurry to sell his music to the public at large, opting instead to evolve at his own pace and without industry fanfare.

Mr. Price concedes that putting a viable commercial album together is not in parallel with his artistic vision.

"I view genre as a limitation," he says. "I describe music in terms of intention, not ‘make and model’. Intention is the way you choose to deliver the sound, how you want the audience to feel. The genre is ‘who’ or ‘what’ music you remind the listener of. I strive to give them a unique feeling rather than remind them of anyone else, or any other song.

Thu 9/24 Valorie Miller at Pisgah Brewing

Thursday Sept 24
Valorie Miller
at Pisgah Brewing
7pm

Valorie Miller has plenty of accolades in the world of songwriting: top finalist in the 2007 Great American Song Contest, a recent invitation to play at New York City's renowned folk club, The Bitter End, and even fan mail from Lucinda Williams herself. But to Valorie, the hallmark of personal success is the intensity with which her fans become attached to her songs. One fan recently had his favorite of her songs played at his mother's memorial service. Another sustained a life threatening injury while hiking in the wilderness alone, and later wrote her to say that playing her songs over and over in his head gave him the strength to get himself out alive. To her fans, Miller's songs are more than entertainment, they are vitally important touchstones. This phenomenon inspires her to keep touring, writing and recording. Her current release, “Autumn Eyes”, masterfully delivers her newest material with the trademarks that everyone who loves her music has come to expect: beautiful guitar picking, a genuine and singular voice, and heart-wrenching lyrics. This woman is a songwriter's songwriter, and she inhabits the Americana music scene like a true native.

Sat 9/19 Dean Fields at Town Pump Tavern

Saturday Sept 19
Dean Fields
w/The Brilliant Inventions
at Town Pump Tavern
8:30pm

800 shows, 5 years, and 150,000 miles have passed since Dean Fields went on the road to pursue a career in music. Now, he hits the road again to promote his most recent release ‘Everything Just Happened the Way that it Happened.’ These 11 songs chronicle the scenes and episodes experienced and witnessed during his life on the road. During that time his address changed from Miami to Nashville to Boston until most recently returning to his hometown of Richmond, VA.

His recent homecoming has found Fields selling out shows in Richmond VA, as well as nearby Washington DC. “Dean Fields writes lyrics like Leonard Cohen and sings like Jeff Buckley. It’s no surprise that there’s a serious buzz on this Virginia singer-songwriter.” (Free Times) Fields’ maturity as a writer and performer is brought to the fore by some of the region’s finest musicians. The band features members of Mandy Moore, Sparklehorse, Agents of Good Roots, KD Lang, Carbonleaf and Modern Groove Syndicate.

Influenced by great songwriters like Jim Croce, James Taylor and Lucinda Williams, Fields has blended a mix of folk-alternative Americana to create a sound only unique to him. His natural and melancholy voice stands out from the mix. “He sings with the tender high tenor of Tim Buckley and the plain spoken poetry of Jim Croce.”(Miami Herald) Fields is truly in his element on stage. His live performances showcase his unassuming yet candid personality; an ‘ah shucks’ sort of charisma audiences are drawn to. They cant help but watch, and listen, and be a part of the experiences unfolding in song.

Fri 9/18 Levi Douglas and Josh Singleton at White Horse Black Mtn

Friday Sept 18
Levi Douglas and Josh Singleton
at White Horse Black Mountain
8pm

Born in the small town of Pistol Thicket, Lousiana, Levi Douglas began his blues odyssey at the tender age of seven when he received his first guitar, a Sears Silvertone. Raised the son of a preacher man, Levi studied under the tutelage of family friend, the Reverend James T. Thornton of Slidell, LA whilst honing his skills performing in the family church and listening to the records of Albert King, Albert Collins, Howlin' Wolf, T. Bone Walker, and many other blues greats. At the age of 22, Levi moved to Texas where he continued to hone his skills in the smoky clubs of Austin and San Antonio and developed friendships with such notables as Alan Haynes and Uncle John Turner among others.

Since arriving in Asheville, Levi has worked with many of the top local and regional acts in the area as a guitarist and is continuing the blues tradition fronting his own band and putting his unique spin on the music he loves.

Joshua Singleton was lucky enough to be born and raised around Jackson, Tennessee which is halfway between Memphis and Nashville. How could he not be musically inspired with the Delta Blues from Memphis, Rockabilly from Jackson and Country from Nashville.
In 1999, Joshua and his brother formed a band called “The Smoking Jackets”. He was the lead vocalist and also played guitar and harmonica. In 2000, The Smoking Jackets released a self produced album called “Youngblood”, and it had tremendous regional success. They traveled around the Southeast, opening for such acts as; The North Mississippi All Stars, Carey Bell, Three Dog Night, and Magic Slim. For two years they were considered THE band to hear in West TN.

After two years with the Jackets, he struck out on his own. He ended up in Europe where he formed his own group and played with several international acts such as; Big Joe Turner and the Memphis Blues Caravan, Xavier Pillac, Jeff Magedson, and Boogie Leg.

He played in France, Germany, Sweden and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. He was there 14 months before coming back and settling in Asheville, NC, then Nashville, TN, and now back in Asheville

Fri 9/18 David Kraai and Saddle Tramps at Town Pump Tavern

Friday Sept 18
David Kraai and Saddle Tramps
at Town Pump Tavern
8:30pm
" The seventies: country rock, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, Neil Young, New Riders of the Purple Sage and especially the influential Gram Parsons. If you like the things that have just been mentioned, there is a very good chance that you will fall for David Kraai and his Saddle Tramps because, as no other, this man knows how to call on the atmosphere of the heyday of country rock. " - Rootstime E-magazine, January 2008

David Kraai (pronounced cry) was born in New York City and raised Upstate in the ever present shadow of the Woodstock music scene. Growing up listening to many diverse styles of music, David eventually attended and graduated from Binghamton University before returning to live in the city of his birth. There he played music constantly and eventually began traveling the country, visiting everywhere; making brief stops to live in Texas, Oklahoma and Los Angeles.
In 2001, David returned to Upstate New York and began work on a new batch of songs that would examine and express what he witnessed from America. David’s first outlet for these was as a member of the highly traditional country group The Old States.

In May 2004, David Kraai released his debut solo album, A Denim Fall. The concept: no frills, just pure examination of the human condition and foundations of songwriting. The album of mellow, Sunday morning, jeans and t-shirt songs and spare, golden, countrified folk music immediately made Kraai a fixture in the New York folk scene. Regularly playing such notable venues as CBGB’s and The Sidewalk Café, invitations soon came for Kraai to pay homage to his predecessors and play at tribute festivals for Gram Parsons, Gene Clark and “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow out in California. It was only a matter of time before the rest of the world caught on and songs off A Denim Fall would begin being played in films and on radio stations as far away as Belgium; one track would even be selected for inclusion on Neil Young’s Living With War Today website as the number 2 protest song of the times.

It wasn’t long before David would hit the studio once again; equipped with some new instrumental skills (banjo, dulcimer, harmonica and mandolin) and a tight group of musicians.

Joined by Jon Stern (of ska/funk legends Perfect Thyroid) on bass, Chris Ragucci on drums, Sean Powell on electric guitar and Marty Hodulick on pedal steel, David Kraai & The Saddle Tramps spent over a year recording their follow-up album, 2007’s high & lonesome. Showcasing the band’s ability to dole out both traditional and progressive, acoustic and electric, laid-back and upbeat, country and rock, it would earn them not only consistently solid reviews but slots on television and radio, headlining stages at festivals and be named the 79th album of the year by WNCW.

Now, with a whole slew of instruments that need to played, songs (old and new) that need to be sung and people that need direct and emotional music to heals their souls, David Kraai & The Saddle Tramps continue traveling down the never-ending road that is life.

Ras Alan's blend of traditional mountain music, original lyrics, and reggae heartbeat is fun, emotional, and socially responsible. Influenced by classic reggae, bluegrass, old time, Southern gospel, jazz, African drumming, and a respectful portion of Rastafari spirituality, Ras Alan's music is full of life, and the reggae rhythm is extremely danceable. Establishing the term "Reggabilly" in 1991, Ras Alan's songs are true stories inspired locally and applicable worldwide, rooted in Southern Appalachian tradition and consciously moving forward!

2009 represents the 16th year of Ras Alan’s “Appalachian Reggae” and his originalreggabilly tunes will be featured alongside anecdotes, stories and instruments gathered along his musical odyssey, weaving mountain cultural traditions with global rhythmic inspiration.

Ras Alan was a featured performer at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, for the “Year of Appalachia”, recording 10 shows on the National Mall in Washington DC, some of which is included in his new live release, Folklife. Ras Alan performed in the “Smithsonian to the Mountains” tour and was greatly honored to appear at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, where A.P. and Sara Carter’s daughter, Janette, kept Southern Appalachian music traditions alive. Ras Alan appeared in Blue Ridge Country Magazine, photographed on the Pickin’ Porch at the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance for a Bristol radio show.

Ras Alan’s three previous albums are housed in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Archives and in East Tennessee State University’s Archives of Appalachia. These albums are Letter from Appalachia (2002), Stone Inna Hurricane (1997), and Native (1993). Letter from Appalachia and Folklife were each considered by the Grammy® committees in both the reggae and contemporary folk categories. Ras Alan appears on several regional and international CD compilations.

Ras Alan has picked and performed with music greats from many genres. He picked with Doc Watson and played African melodies with Malian master musician, Ali Farke Toure. He jammed with Yonder Mountain String Band; traded mandolin duet licks with Jethro Burns; and drummed with Nigerian Babetunde Olatunji. Ras Alan, a member and performer for Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide, shared the stage with Burning Spear and The Wailers.

"I grew up listening to a lot of AM radio, like a lot of the people in the 60s and 70s, and I heard stuff like Paul Simon and Mungo Jerry. Around that time I heard Eric Clapton’s version of “I Shot the Sheriff” and I really liked the rhythm part of it. Then a friend of my cousin told me that if I liked that, I should hear the guy that wrote the song. And I remember clearly to this day him dropping the needle on that vinyl record of Bob Marley and the Wailers' Live at the Lyceum. It changed my life. I grew up a Southern Baptist and this music had all the women singing the gospel harmonies and the spiritual feeling to it, and then you add the guitar and electric bass and the drums. I was smitten. It was cool, too, because it was a little outside the norm for a young radical forming his opinion of the world."

Come join your friends and neighbors for a glimpse into a musical seeker’s life, a poet’s warehouse and a regular guy with an irregular beat.

Sat 9/12 The Spikedrivers at Town Pump Tavern

Saturday Sept 12
The Spikedrivers
at The Town Pump Tavern
8:30pm

“This is prototypical Americana music: a stew of bluegrass, country, folk, and blues, none dominate, all contribute considerably. ”-Jeff Weiss,www.milesofmusic.com.

" Their sound is a reflection of raw musical talent, and is has a distinctive flavor that comes out somewhere between The Wilders and Old Crow Medicine Show. Toss in a few melancholy tunes, the occasional weeping, heaving cello and a general old-timey feel to their jam, and the only conclusion is that The Spikedrivers deliver exactly what they advertise. It’s boom-funk-chunk,everything-in-the-kitchen, leave-behind-you-order-and-listen country kind of music.”-Jesse nathan, The Pitch. Kansas City,Missouri. April 6,2006

In 2003 a new sound sprang up in the Rust Belt; a raucous, down- and-dirty sound, an intoxicating and gritty sound that pulled people in droves to dance floors across the Midwest. It was the sound of The Spikedrivers playing their unique blend of swinging, bluesy, upbeat, country-fried rock ‘n’ roll. Front man Jesse Henry’s unique and down-home song writing meets the electrified ruckus and wild precision of the backing band similar to what might have been if Woody Guthrie had led NRBQ.

In 2007 with one live album and their first studio album just released, The Spikedrivers took their show on the road. They played in eleven states rocking the shores of Massachusetts, the
bright lights of New York, and the fields of Illinois. The band gained fans across the East Coast and the Midwest. Along the way The Spikedrivers released their second live CD, “Live in New York City” which showcased how easily The Spikedrivers can grab hold of an audience in a packed club and turn them instantly to avid fans.

The Spikedrivers front man is Jesse Henry, who was raised Mennonite in rural Northwest Ohio and who spent his early years working on grain elevators and learning songs of the great American Troubadours. He brings his electrifying stage presence and musicianship wherever he roams. Megan Palmer, a registered nurse by day, turns fiddle-playing super hero by night; serenading the audience with her sultry voice and ravishing them with white-hot fiddle leads. Steve Sweney, best known for his cosmic guitar work with the band Ekoostik Hookah, gets to showcase a different side of his playing. He strips down to just amp and guitar and listeners get to relish the raw tone and intensity. John Boestler the guitar wizard is the newest member bringing 40-plus years of experience as well as being Sweney’s early mentor. The rhythm section and backbone holding it all together are Nate Anders and Steven Fox. A vibraphonist and college educator, Nate beats the skins like a pack of hounds is on his tail all the while booming baritone harmony. Fox brings his lightning-fast bow acrobatics and hard-thumping sound on the upright bass to adventurous levels as well as singing his sideburns off.

Fri 9/11 WSNB Blues at White Horse BLack Mountain

Friday Sept 11
WSNB (We Sing Nasty Blues)
White Horse Black Mountain
8:00pm

WSNB is rock solid swamp blues....straight from the Mississippi Delta. WSNB stands for We Sing Nasty Blues and their brand of nasty blues has the grittiness that bridges the Delta to Chicago blues spectrum.

Willie Shane's growling voice and soulful harp playing are indicative of his Mississippi roots and Nathan's slide work is the perfect compliment to Shane. The hard driving rhythm section of Jason & Clay is steady and persistent, like pistons of a big block engine. The lyrics are intellegent, sometimes witty...covering subjects from lust, love, and insanity to Hurricane Katrina and the war in Iraq. WSNB's unique lyrics and homespun style of music is straight from soul goodness. Like a train coming through your front door, WSNB will make your hips shake, your feet move, & your big toe jump up in yo' boot!

A TOP 10 FINALIST at the 2007 INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE in Memphis, Tennessee, WSNB was selected by the editors of Billboard Magazine as one of the top independent bands in the Southeast. Their recent release, Oktibbeha County, garnered widespread airplay and kept them on the Americana charts for weeks.

WSNB makes it's home in the Western Foothills of North Carolina but their real home is on the road as they maintain a full touring schedule.

Fri 9/11 The Piedmont Boys at Town Pump Tavern

Friday September 11
The Piedmont Boys
at Town Pump Tavern
9pm
"The Piedmont Boys sound like a lot of things happened to them on the way to everything they've become -- they sound like they're from Texas, they're from Greenville; they sound like they've been pickin' for years, they've been playing together for seven months; they sound like a country band, but they've got bluegrass chops as good as the best of 'em; they've got harmonies that make 'em sound like a country bar band, but they've played West Coast rodeos and PBR bull-riding events. On top of that, they've got an outlaw country sound that flies in the face of their wholesome good looks. Their fast-growing crowd eat up their screaming fiddle solos, slap-happy lyrics and gen-u-wine whiskey-fied, old-fashioned country songs."

Fri 9/11 Kevin Scanlon at Straightaway Cafe

Friday Sept 11
Kevin Scanlon
at Straightaway Cafe
6pm
Kevin began his journey into song-writing in his early teens, and has been a prolific lyricist ever since. The first instrument Kevin played seriously was the guitar, and has since developed a refreshingly traditional finger-picking style that is suited to the songs he writes and performs. Whether it's an original piece or the works of Elizabeth Cotten to Townes Van Zandt, Kevin is able to perform a very authentic sound, especially when his harmonica is hanging from his harness.

In the mid 90's, Kevin's taste in music started to shift to historical cultural music. . Walking into a local pub during an open Irish jam would change him as a musician. This music has a simple honesty in both the subject matter and music arrangement, which is what ended up the foundation for Kevin Scanlon as a musician. It opened up a world of new music study, including old European folk music, Irish sea shanties, old country and bluegrass.

Logically, his next instrument of interest was the banjo. He developed competent technique in both claw-hammer(old time)and 3 finger(bluegrass) styles. Now Kevin had the tools in his bag to perform century old folk music as well as popular modern music. Add a very unique vocal timbre and lyrics written for the common man about the real world around us, and we have a well rounded, straight forward artist who's message needs to be heard. In the past years,
Kevin has toured all over the eastern seaboard playing with a diverse group of artists, as well as solo performing. He has performed with a professional vocal ensemble, a few bluegrass groups, folk projects, rock and roll, and projects in Irish music from traditional to modern Irish punk. Currently residing in rural North Carolina, his art having been tempered by his life experience, Kevin has come into his own. His very original sound is defined and polished. Now all that remains is to spread his message to the public.

Thu 9/10 Braden Land at Town Pump Tavern

Thursday Sept 10
Braden Land
at Town Pump Tavern
8:30pm
Born in Denver, Braden’s family moved around a lot while he was growing up and that sense of finding one’s place in the world carries over into many of his songs. Braden released his first album Dirt in 2006 and his second album "Stumble & Glow" was released on Exodus Records in 2008.

"Singer-songwriter Braden Land, a promising young folk-rock-roots troubadour with a hefty dose of Southern blues and a seasoned literary writer’s heart. Land is one of those musicians with an off-center quality that’s infectious and enhanced by his raw vocals, meandering stories and wayward vision of life." -The Toledo Blade

"Take a voice similar to Gram Parsons, add the harmonica sound of classic Dylan, a dash of solid acoustic guitar, some excellent lyrics, mix them all together, and you have Braden Land." -David Bowling of DailyVault.com

"Tall, skinny, quiet and unassuming, Braden Land is a radioactive spyship in disguise. He may not be a household name (yet), but it would be wise to get this potent singer-songwriter on your radar now. Seemingly tapped into a secret, glowing fold of time-space, Land oozes engaging songs easy to immerse yourself in. They are heartfelt, tinged with sadness, like stepping in a puddle on a steamy day after heavy rains.Land writes, sings and plays fat with feeling. He poetically presents real life subjects - possibly contrived, possibly tales direct from his real young life, definitely stoked with and backed by truth. His steady acoustic guitar, occasionally layered with harmonica, is full enough to accompany Land's killer vocals, which are somewhere along the lines of ring-around-the-rosie with Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and Lowell George. Big icons for comparison, I know. This gawky, teenaged-looking guy surprisingly houses the enormous weight of an iron-core magnet with a laser presence so huge he left a hole in the carpet where he stood and a scar burned into my soul memory plate." - Luxury Wafers

Thu 9/10 Thunderdrums at Pisgah Brewing

Thursday September 10
Thunderdrums
at Pisgah Brewing
7pm

World-beat percussion fused to electronica in a unique fashion would be the best description for the solo act known as Thunderdrums. Frank Bloom has simply taken his broad vocabulary of drumset and percussion and given an “old trick” a new twist: Looping unlike most audiences have ever seen. The melding of organic instrumentation with electronic nuances has brought Frank to the crossroads of tribal, trance, house, drum-n-bass compositions that have audiences all over on their feet and wanting more when the show is done. Frank’s onstage setup is most aptly described as “big” with an array of handdrums, percussion instruments, drumset, looping and effects pedals, samplers, drum machines and sometimes a keyboard.

Thunderdrums is a show not to be missed by fans of percussion, electronica, tribal dance music and everything in between. Genre-defying, universally entertaining and down right fun are descriptions that people come away with when trying to tell their friends about Thunderdrums.

Sat 9/5 Chuck Brodsky at White Horse Black Mtn

Saturday September 5
Chuck Brodsky
at White Horse Black Mountain
8pm

A down to earth musical storyteller, with adry, barb-witted social commentary combined with a deep underlying compassion, Brodsky knows that the best stories are the little things in the lives of everyday people trying to muddle through with some grace. His great gift as a writer is to infuse these stories with humanity and humor, making them resonate profoundly with his listeners. His spoken introductions to his songs can be as spellbinding as his colorful lyrics, which he brings to life with a well-travelled voice and a delivery that's natural and conversational. His groove-oriented strumming and fingerpicking draw on influences from the mountains of western North Carolina where he now lives, and from lots of different good old traditional folk stuff of all kinds.

Chuck has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Ireland for 12 years, playing at folk festivals such as Tønder in Denmark, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Kerrville, Philadelphia, and Strawberry, as well as the Lincoln Center Out of Door series in New York, among others. Some of the artists he's appeared in concert with include Arlo Guthrie, Janis Ian, Pete Seeger, Tim O'Brien, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, John Hartford, Greg Brown, Gillian Welch, Dick Gaughan, Tom Paxton, Ferron, Richie Havens, Patty Larkin, Steve Forbert, The Kingston Trio, and Christine Lavin. His influences include John Hartford, Mark Twain, Nic Jones, Bob Dylan, Lowell George, Jackson Browne, Steve Forbert, The Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, and David Massengill.

I would place him in the Dylan-Guthrie-Prine league without question.
His lyrics are drawn from the lives of everyday people and his acoustic guitar playing is quite amazing."

There are alot of good ones, but when it comes to the
really great ones it boils down to a select few -- he’s one of them"

Fri 9/4 Shantavaani at White Horse Black Mountain

Friday September 4
SHANTAVAANI
at White Horse Black Mountain
8pm

Shantavaani - the name roughly translates to "Peace through Music", and the group's tagline is "From Raga to Reggae'!

ShantavaaniAn ecletic group of musicians that create a mystical vibe through the soulful music traditions of the world. From roots Americana, jazz, to the far off traditions of India and beyond.

http://www.myspace.com/shantavaani
Only 6.00 cover charge.

Shantavaani is:

Jay Brown:
Jay Brown is a founding member of the classic blues, country and swing group, Lazybirds. He has played his guitar and harmonicas with the likes of Doc Watson, Etta Baker, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Jay has studied the roots of American music all across the south, traditional Ghanian music in West Africa, and Indian Classical music with his wife, Aditi. His original music is a regular feature on WNCW.

Aditi Sethi
Aditi began playing the harmonium, an indian instrument, and singing bhajans and shabads, spiritual songs of the indian traditions, when she was 5 years old. She first learned music from her grandparents in India. Her family moved to America from India in 1983. As a child, Aditi frequently performed at concerts with her father, who is an accomplished singer in the traditional Indian style.

Sarah Carlisle
Sarah's musical journey began at the age of 10 when she began to play the upright bass. She grew up playing classical music and attended the prestigious Peabody Conservatory on a merit scholarship. It was there, however, when she discovered the vast world of improvisation and began to study jazz under the guidance of Gary Thomas and Michael Formanek. She has been a sought after freelance bassist in the Baltimore/DC area ever since, playing at venues such as Blues Alley and The New Haven Lounge with great local musicians. Most recently, she has come to Asheville where she has been blessed by the talents of Luna Rasa & Shantaavani.

Matthew Cox
An extraordinarily sensitive and creative percussionist, Matthew's style of Tabla playing is melodic and expansive, adapting a unique form of modified tabla tarang to allow for chord changes and harmonies not found in Indian music. With over 25 years in music, he pulls from diverse backgrounds in classical, jazz, Native American sacred singing under the apprenticeship of Cherokee elder Ed Littlefox, and electronic music with the late Dr. Bob Moog followed by the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He began in 2005 with his East Indian music teachers Samir Chatterjee, Kuntala Ray, and Kumar Das. He has accompanied the likes of music historian and virtuoso Gerald Trimble, Wynne Paris, Wynton Marsalis, the late Sean Layton of JFJO, the Carnatic Brothers, Durga Das, Tibetan sacred singer Yungchen Lhamo, Sangita Devi, and the world class female pioneer of the hansaveena Indian slide guitar, Kuntala Ray.

Fri 9/4 Brushfire Stankgrass at Pisgah Brewing

Friday September 4
Brushfire Stankgrass
at Pisgah Brewing
8pm

http://pisgahbrewing.com/
www.myspace.com/brushfirestankgrass

Featuring eclectic live performances showcasing inventive songwriting, educated musicianship, and a knack for making people dance, Brushfire Stankgrass fuses old mountain music with new for a remarkably original sound. This "Stankgrass" sound has landed the group three sessions in western North Carolina's famed WNCW Studio B over the past two year and regular airplay on independent stations nationwide. Their live concerts, recorded in stunning multi-track clarity, are downloaded from archive.org at a rate of over two hundred downloads per week.

The remarkable chemistry and live experimentation in the music of Brushfire Stankgrass begins with its founding members, Ben & Will Saylor. The brothers began playing music in the Suzuki method at the age of three and picked up the banjo and guitar at 10 & 12, respectively. They still maintain their bluegrass chops today, but have added some Moog analog effects and "trance-mountain dub" rhythms to create a style which has moved beyond the traditional into truly uncharted territory; they call it Stankgrass. Along the way the brothers Saylor have found two outstanding musicians to round out the group. Bassist Bryan White hails from the land of Merlefest (Wilkesboro, NC), and is a veteran composer and performer on upright and electric basses.

Drumming virtuoso Ian Cunningham slides into the newgrass-style seamlessly, due probably to the fact that he comes from a bluegrass-picking family (his father was a founding member of Whitewater Bluegrass Co). Both Bryan and Ian are accomplished musicians in their own right, and they maintain a busy schedule playing music full-time with multiple groups. Brushfire Stankgrass believes it is their own task to bring southern Appalachian music one step further. John Hartford said that "Bluegrass music is a thing of the past and the same for rock & roll." As banjo player Ben Saylor stated in a recent WNCW interview, "We like to think that we picked up where Hartford left off."

Since its inception by Drew Carman and Dylan Solise in early 2006, The Corduroy Road has molded bluegrass, Americana, folk rock, and old-time country with the rawest of live performances. The two, born and raised in the Central Kentucky Bluegrass Region where they learned their craft, now reside in the musical gem of the southeast: Athens, GA.

Athens Banner Herald called them “bluegrass rockers…influenced by old time country and Americana, while the live performances exude the energy of punk rock.”

"Athens, Georgia's The Corduroy Road has quickly become one of the finest roots rock bands in the Southeast. Carman and Solise are emerging as one of the strongest young songwriting duos on the Americana scene.”
-An Honest Tune

"Although rooted in classic Americana, with lots of foot stomping, banjo plucking and pedal steel, The Corduroy Road also has a knack for endearing pop sensibility. It just takes one verse of swaying to the acoustic rhythms before you are singing along the next time the chorus rolls around. It’s the kind of music that practically begs for a sing-along, with Carman and Solise’s rich, organic harmonies leading the way.....Fans of anything from country to bluegrass to folk to rock will especially enjoy The Corduroy Road's notoriously lively shows.”
-Flagpole

“The chatty banjo, rolling harmonies, the acoustic guitar and melodic, Southern vocals are the name of the game for the Athens quartet. The music is so damn, well comfy, that the quaint country and roots music peppered with folk rock sounds warmly familiar.”

Fiesty mountain music that Nashville and your preacher warned you about. Rounders, miscreants and ne'er do wells welcome as well as their dogs.

Named after Edward Teach's (aka Blackbeard) commandeered pirate ship that wreaked havoc and mayhem along the South Carolina and Virginia coasts the and raises the dram glass to natives such as Charlie Poole, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Etta Baker, Tommy Jerrell, Benton Flippen, Frank Profitt and others who created the "Carolina Sound" that to this day defines North Carolina string band music. In addition to the ballads and fiddle tunes their repetoire includes both hokum and maritime tunes.
