at The Straightaway Cafe

Fiesty mountain music that Nashville and your preacher warned you about. Rounders, miscreants and ne'er do wells welcome as well as their dogs.

We are a North Carolina band who raises the dram glass to natives such as Charlie Poole, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Etta Baker, Tommy Jerrell, Benton Flippen, Frank Profitt and others who created the "Carolina Sound" that to this day defines North Carolina string band music.

The modern commercial Velveeta Nashville sound (late 20th century) does not find its way into our music.

We also perfrom regional string band music from the Southeast such as Gid Tanner, Howard Armstrong, Jimmie Rogers, The Kessinger Brothers, The Stripling Brothers, The Mississippi Sheiks, Uncle Dave Macon, The Balfa Brothers, Sam McGhee (from sunny Tennessee), Dock Boggs, Ralph Blizzard along with a few hokum and maritime tunes are our favorite sources of inspiration.

We are named after Edward Teach's (aka Blackbeard) commandeered pirate ship that wreaked havoc and mayhem along the South Carolina and Virginia coasts during the golden age of piracy before being scuttled in the secluded inlet off the North Carolina coast known as Teach's Hole.
