"They combine funk, jazz, blues and rock...Matt Leech's sick guitar skills and Madison Flego's southern-gal vocals (that accent just gets me every time), they're making an impression". -Rich from Snap, Crackle, Pop- an entertainment blog maintained by the Collegian staff
Hay Sugar, a relatively new band to the local music scene has a unique style that separates themselves from most bands in local areas. They aren’t strictly bluegrass and play a lot of southern rock covers.
Hay Sugar started out as a group of friends wanting to play music together. After a few months and a few road trips, Hay Sugar grew into a band with a lov
e of music and a need to play it and mold it into their own. A few shows led to other opportunities to play popular venues in the State College, Pennsylvania area as well as the Movin’ On Music Festival after winning a competition for a spot on the bill.
Outside influences and friends helped to shape their sound and after graduating from college, Matt Leech and Madison Flego decided to migrate to Asheville to pursue their music in an eclectic and nurturing environment.
With the move came the collaborative energy of Matt’s brother, Tall Paul, who is no stranger to the Asheville music scene, often playing with local favorites as well as teaching music. The three formed a musical sound that encompasses a variety of tastes and styles to weld their love of music to each song that they play.
While getting their feet wet in the local circuit, they met Salley Williamson, a wonderful artist and aspiring musician. She became a talented addition to Hay Sugar.
