Fri 11/20 Cary Fridley Band at Pisgah Brewing

Friday November 20th
Cary Fridley and Down South
at Pisgah Brewing
8pm

Cary Fridley’s powerful vocals soar on an all-star group featuring honky-tonk guitar, bluesy pedal-steel and hot Appalachian fiddle stylings. The music shows true love for Southern music – black and white, rural and urban, mountain and Mississippi delta – and the notable ability to tie it all together. Cary's singing evokes centuries of Southern voices from Memphis Minnie to Maybelle Carter, breathing new life into the music of her Southern background.

"The original and old songs I sing with Down South are all rooted in the country music tradition, but they are also evolved from the purely traditional country songs I sang with the Freight Hoppers in the 1990's. Down South connects with the sounds of earlier bands like Bob Wills, Hank Thompson, and Patsy Cline, while simultaneously reflecting modern times through country dancing and traditional vocals, which is what those artists were doing in their careers in their times. These country greats embodied their traditional heritage and brought it to the mainstream in a fresh, new way.
The singing in Down South carries with it a sense of the South and of the mountains, and that the band brings the dancing and fun music which has always been a tradition in the culture. Most inspiring to me in the past few years is Louisiana traditional country music, especially their use of modern electric instruments, still keeping the traditional elements and the soul of the music intact. Country music is powerful and real, and it is very much alive and well in today's modern times. I feel very lucky to be able to participate and have such great musicians around me to share it with. Thank you all for your support of Down South and of live community music everywhere."

“The rediscovery, rejuvenation and reinterpretation of tunes both long-lost and intimately familiar is a large part of this music’s enduring appeal, and Fridley, despite being several generations removed, realizes that." Kevin Oliver, No Depression
